AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION NATIONAL LOBBY DAY, WASHINGTON, DC, OCTOBER 16—18, 2019

Ferguson in Washington

Dr. John Ferguson, Eastern Kentucky University, Exercise & Sport Science Department/ Curriculum & Instruction Department was chosen to represent Kentucky at the American Heart Association’s (AHA) National Lobby Day recently.  During his time in Washington he received training concerning special issues which are of interest to the AHA and met with key legislators representing the state of Kentucky to discuss specific legislation.  Three areas of concern were: 1.) Surprise medical billing/balanced billing (protect patients from financially crippling surprise medical bills);  2.) Tobacco flavors (ban the sale of flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, cigars, and menthol cigarettes); and 3.) Medical research funding (support at least a $2.5 billion  funding increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in FY 2020.  The Lobby Day volunteers were well-received and had the opportunity to engage in positive dialogue with lawmakers.
